You certainly remember that last July IISMAS signed with TYA an agreement for the realization of a well in an area called May Duba, in Mekele. The agreement also included the acquisition, as a loan for use, of a large plot of land on which a kitchen-garden could be planted in order to provide for the needs of our Italian Dermatological Center (IDC).
I'll save you the description of the hitches and bureaucratic drags we were confronted with and run to the conclusion: we have water! On the 1st of November, the first spurt of water sprung out from a depth of only 14 meters . “Exciting” is too weak a word to describe what you feel on watching water spring out from a 30-centimetre hole on the ground. Obviously that water wasn't “good”, but now - at the moment I am writing we have reached 120 metres depth - the water is drinkable. Fancy that the pressure is so strong as to allow thinking that it could be fizzy mineral water! Of course, I am extremely happy and everybody at IISMAS is thrilled. No wonder, if you realize what water means in a country where drought and famine caused, and constantly threaten to cause, hundred thousands of victims.
Our heartful “thanks” - of course also on behalf of all the beneficiaries of the water – goes to “ La Ruota Internazionale ” of Rome and to its President Anna Maria Pollak who, besides her generosity has revealed an outstanding patience, after donating a sizeable amount of money more than a year ago.
Our gratitude also goes to “Camminare Insieme, of Turin , and to the President Corrado Ferro, for considerably contributing to the accomplishment of this dream.
As soon as possible I will fly to Mekele in order to fence the garden, to buy a cow and some hens - they will stay in a corner of the garden providing us with free milk and eggs-, and to recruit two or three peasants. So there will be three more families getting a salary for their work without having to thank for what they receive, but only for the opportunity offered to them of having a job, as it would be fair for all the others! |
