Il 27 luglio scorso l'IISMAS ha firmato un accordo con una NGO etiopica denominata Tigray Youth Association (TYA). In base a suddetto accordo, fra le altre cose, noi ci siamo impegnati a finanziare lo studio geologico, lo scavo e la manutenzione di un pozzo nella zona di Mekele denominata Mayduba, su un terreno che la TYA ha ottenuto dalla municipalità. L'acqua che sorgerà sarà utilizzata dalla TYA per le proprie attività e da noi stessi, per irrigare un appezzamento di circa 5000 mq di terreno che ci è stato assegnato nella stessa area. Utilizzeremo questo spazio per coltivare un orto e allevare alcuni animali così da garantire ai pazienti dell' Italian Dermatological Center verdura, latte e uova fresche e abbondanti… a buon mercato.

Abbiamo potuto firmare questo accordo grazie all'impegno di tutti noi e del personale locale, ma soprattutto grazie al finanziamento della spesa relativa al pozzo da parte delle amiche ed amici de “La ruota internazionale” di Roma e della “Camminare Insieme” di Torino.

L'accordo con la TYA prevede e auspica ulteriore collaborazione fra le due Associazioni a vantaggio delle nuove generazioni locali soprattutto in campo educativo e occupazionale.

La prima di queste iniziative comuni prevede il reperimento da parte nostra di “cose” nuove o usate, che, non più appetite in Italia, siano ancora utilizzabili in Etiopia. Chiaramente non intendiamo trasformare Mekele nella nostra pattumiera; le “cose”, le più varie, dovranno essere in buono stato e, nel caso si tratti di abiti o calzature, devono essere pulite, stirate o piegate. Le altre “cose” possono essere personal computer di vecchia generazione, monitor, tastiere, mouse da utilizzare nelle scuole e negli uffici di giovani imprenditori e strumenti come trapani, avvitatori, cacciaviti, chiavi e pinze da utilizzare nelle officine gestite da associati alla TYA o in officine che possono nascere apposta grazie agli strumenti che reperiremo. Non mettiamo limiti alla Provvidenza né alla nostra fantasia e chiediamo ad amici e parenti di regalare biciclette e – perché no? – motorini o automobili. Dirigenti o afferenti ad Associazioni sportive potrebbero regalare attrezzature ed oggetti come “giochi di maglie” da calcio, reti da volley, palloni e altre attrezzature.

Recently, on 27 th July 2006, the International Institute Medical Anthropological Social Sciences (IIMASS) ha signed an agreement with Tigray Youth Association (TYA), an Ethiopian NGO. According to the agreement, IIMASS has undertaken to finance the geological research, the excavation and the maintenance of a well in the area of Mekele called Mayduba, in a ground that TYA has obtained from the municipality. The water so derived will be used by TYA for its activities and by IIMASS to irrigate a plot of land of about 5,000 square metres granted to it in the same area. The land will serve the purpose of planting a kitchen garden, and breeding some animals, in order to guarantee an abundant and cheap supply of fresh vegetables, milk and eggs to the patients of the Italian Dermatological Center .

IIMASS was able to sign the agreement thanks to the commitment of all members and of the local staff, and especially thanks to the financing of the well costs by the friends of La Ruota Internazionale , in Rome and of “Camminare Insieme” in Turin .

The agreement foresees, and hopes for, further collaboration between the two associations in favour of the local new generations, especially in the occupational and formative field.

The first of such common initiatives includes on our part the finding of new and second-hand stuff which, no longer used or desirable in Italy , could still be exploitable in Ethiopia . We clearly do not intend to make Mekele our trash-can and all stuff, objects and materials should be in good repair. Shoes and clothes should be clean, ironed and folded. Other useful stuff could be old generation personal computers, monitors, keyboards, mouses - to be employed in schools and in offices of young traders and undertakers - and tools such as drills, electric screwers, screw drivers, spanners and pliers to be used in workshops run by TYA associates or expressly created, depending on the available tools and implements. No limits to goodwill and imagination! Let's involve relatives and friends and ask them to donate bikes and - why not? - motorbikes and cars. Managers or sports club members could donate football kits and equipment, volley nets, soccer balls, etc. All this activity will be coordinated by Beppe Fontanarosa through the Fund Raising Office.
