ABSTRACT

Background
Traction Alopecia is the common cause of hair loss. The use of hair extensions, and pulling forces exerted on the scalp hairs are the major problems .The two types of traction alopecia are marginal and non marginal. The other causes of TA are the various hair styling practices such as use of braids, hair rollers, weaves, twists and locks.
Pathophyriology: TA is associated with sustained tension on the scalp hairs.
Traction causes hair to loosen from its follicular roots and the hair loss in often symmetric and occur along the fronto-temporal hairline. When the tensile forces are chronically present follicular scaring and permanent alopecia may rest.
Frequency: the exact frequency of TA is yet to be studied (documented) in Ethiopia as well as in many countries (internationally).
Morbidity: It may lead to permanent hair loss if it is undetected for a
longtime.
Race: Commonly seen in Africans, African Americans, Japanese
women and silks men in India
Sex : Women > Men
Age: TA is commonly seen in children and young adults but the
exact frequency has to be worked out
Cause: The basic mechanisms of traction Alopecia are trichotillomania, telogen conversion, and over processing of scalp hairs. When their causes are identified, their immediate cession will reverse the alopecia.
Lab studies: Usually diagnosed with through history taking and physical examination. History of tight braids or chemical straightening
suggests the diagnosis of T.A.
Histological Finding: Early in the conditions, lymphocytes surround a lechenoid periflliculitis with infundibulum. Later, as the process evolves,
a zone of fibroplasia separates this infiltration.
Treatment:
• Any practice that exert traction the hair must be discontinued
• Patents should avoid any practices that exert traction on the hairs such as use of tight curlers, nylon brushes, braiding, chemical hair straightening, etc.
Prognosis:
• Good and reversible if diagnosed early and if the hair styling in question in discontinued
• Bad and permanent if the hair loss in undetected for a long time
