Abbi cura di stare in buona salute! Era questo il saluto che chiudeva le antiche lettere in latino.

Quali siano i fondamenti, le strategie e i fattori per riuscire a vivere in buona salute, e come far sì soprattutto che un numero sempre maggiore di persone abbiano questa possibilità, è ambito specifico delle scienze mediche e degli apparati sanitari.

L'annuale appuntamento che la Struttura Complessa di Medicina delle Migrazioni, del Turismo e di Dermatologia Tropicale dell'Istituto San Gallicano (IRCCS) di Roma promuove dal 1993 è una delle sue molte iniziative volte ad offrire aggiornamento, formazione e scambio di esperienze nel campo della salute.

Ma è noto che molteplici sono gli elementi che concorrono a mantenersi in buona salute, e altrettanti gli ostacoli a questa prospettiva: a condizioni di vita e di lavoro decorose, al rispetto della dignità della persona e delle sue possibilità di espressione, al mantenimento di un ambiente salubre, si oppongono ancora per popoli interi miseria, sfruttamento, emarginazione, inquinamento, carestie, guerre. Problemi che sembrano diventare sempre più pressanti e gravi. Tuttavia, al di là degli ormai noti effetti del dilagare di una mondializzazione aggressiva, che per ragioni di profitto e di potere tende a diffondere pseudovalori, a uniformare stili di vita consumistici, ad alimentare logiche di esclusione dei diversi e dei deboli, lentamente si fanno strada nuove idee sullo sviluppo, visto come crescita sociale, interscambio aperto, apprendimento reciproco, opportunità per tutti. Altri tipi di relazioni conquistano spazi sempre più ampi nella coscienza e nella società e in ogni luogo cominciano a formarsi gruppi, comunità, organismi con una visione più completa dello sviluppo: realizzare cioè forme di globalizzazione che non passino solo attraverso l'economia e la tecno-scienza, ma anche attraverso la solidarietà, la collaborazione, il rispetto per la natura e l'ambiente.

Con l'aiuto di studiosi ed esperti di varie discipline verranno prese in esame alcune delle tematiche più vicine alle attività svolte dalla nostra Struttura.

Take care of your health : this used to be the final well-wishing greeting concluding the letters written in Latin by the ancient Romans.

The grounding, the strategies and the methodology which allow us to succeed in living in good health, and above all the search for the best way to follow in order that the largest possible number of persons may have this possibility: these are all specific responsibility of the medical sciences and of the health systems.

The annual appointment organized by the Dept. of Preventive Medicine for Migration, Tourism and Tropical Dermatology of San Gallicano Hospital, Scientific Research Institute (IRCCS) in Rome is precisely one of its many initiatives aimed at offering updating, training and exchange of experiences in the field of health.

Many are the factors which contribute to make people keep in good health, but many as well are the obstacles against this perspective: in entire populations poverty, exploitation, isolation, pollution, famine and wars are still hindering the possibility of comfortable and decorous conditions of life and work. These calamities are an obstacle to the promotion of the dignity and the rights of all human beings, to freedom of expression and to the preservation of a healthy environment, and yet they seem to become more and more pressing and serious. However, despite the pernicious effects of the widening of an aggressive globalization - which for reasons of profit and power tends to spread false values, to standardize consumer lifestyle and to encourage inclination to exclude the “different” and the “weak”-, more constructive ideas are slowly becoming popular with respect to development, seen as social growth, open trade, mutual learning, opportunities for everybody. Other types of relationships are finding increasingly wide space in the conscience of the society, and we notice everywhere the creation of groups, communities, institutions with a more comprehensive vision: different forms of globalization are considered which are not meant to depend only on economic, technological and scientific factors, but take also into account solidarity, cooperation, respect for nature and environment.

Some of these themes, the ones which are closer to the activities carried out in our Institute, will be taken into consideration with the help of scientists and experts in various disciplines. Our Institute, which for many years has been dealing with transcultural medicine, migratory phenomena, research, treatment and monitoring of the persons at risk of social exclusion, is a Center of Reference and Consultation for the Lazio Region and other Health Agencies. Moreover, in collaboration with the no profit association IISMAS, our Institute has recently participated in several projects for the Region, the Province, the Municipality of Rome, various Ministries, Universities and Institutions, both Italian and international.
