Nella nostra società contraddittoria, tanto opulenta da essere minacciata dai rischi del benessere e del consumismo, ma al tempo stesso così disattenta alle cause profonde di povertà, emarginazione, disadattamento, è fondamentale ricollocare al centro l'essere umano e affrontare con chiarezza e decisione i problemi che attengono più da vicino alle sue sofferenze e provocano la caduta delle risorse che danno senso alla vita. Occorre un impegno continuo, e la partecipazione di tutti, per giungere a un vero rispetto delle persone e a una diversa valutazione dei beni e del progresso.

Lo sforzo per elevare la qualità di vita di ogni uomo sulla base della sua dignità richiede competenza, creatività, e dedizione da parte di ciascuno di noi ed essere all'altezza di un tale compito non è certo facile.

D'altronde più alto è il fine da raggiungere, più stimolante è la sfida. L'attività quotidiana che si svolge nel nostro Istituto per contrastare le tante forme di malattia e disagio, nello sforzo di accogliere, riabilitare e dare speranza alle persone, è il nostro contributo a questo obiettivo.

Da più di venti anni la Struttura è impegnata nel campo dei fenomeni migratori, della medicina transculturale, della ricerca, trattamento e monitoraggio delle patologie delle persone a rischio di esclusione sociale. Oltre agli italiani, sono assistiti nomadi, senza fissa dimora, immigrati regolari e clandestini, rifugiati, vittime di tortura.

La Struttura è Centro di Riferimento e Consulenza della Regione Lazio e delle Aziende Sanitarie e, recentemente anche insieme alla Onlus IISMAS, collabora nell'ambito di numerosi progetti in Italia e all'estero con la Regione , la Provincia e il Comune di Roma, vari Ministeri, Università ed Organismi italiani ed internazionali.

Con l'aiuto di studiosi ed esperti di varie discipline verranno presi in esame e discussi temi e problemi attinenti alle attività svolte dalla Struttura ed è in questa ricerca che desideriamo coinvolgere chi vorrà accogliere il nostro invito a partecipare al convegno.

In our conflicting society, so wealthy as to be threatened by the risks of too much affluence and consumerism, and yet so careless about the deep-rooted reasons of poverty, marginalization and distress, it is of the utmost importance to reconsider the centrality of the human beings and to confront with determination and wide-open eyes the problems more deeply related to their suffering and to the loss of the resources which make life worth living. Constant commitment and the participation of all is required to attain a real respect towards the people and a different evaluation of the goods and the progress.

Striving to enhance the life quality of every person, on the grounds of his/her dignity calls for expertise, creativity and dedication and to cope effectively with such a demanding task is not certainly easy.

And yet, the higher the goal, the more interesting the challenge. The daily activity carried out by our Institute, in the endeavour to oppose and treat the many forms of disease and distress, as well as to assist and rehabilitate the people, and sustain their hope in life, is our contribution to the purpose.

For over twenty years the Institute has been dealing with migration issues, transcultural medicine, research, treatment and monitoring of the pathologies of the people at risk of social exclusion. Besides the nationals, we assist nomad and homeless people, regular and illegal immigrants, refugees, victims of torture.

The Institute is Advisory and Reference Centre for Regione Lazio and other Health Agencies and, recently also in collaboration with the non-profit Association IISMAS, is involved in several projects in Italy and abroad with the Region Lazio, the Province of Rome, the Municipality of Rome, various Ministries, Universities and Institutions, both Italian and international.

A number of scientists and experts in various disciplines will stimulate study and discussion and in this research we wish to involve all those willing to accept our invitation to the Workshop.
